from the land of language giants and hard to find tortilla chips

something new!:

Today was "MOVE DAY" and i didn't move, but my companion and trainer did - Sister Vance. we were together for over 4 months, which is pretty long for a trainer and trainee. it was sad to say goodbye, but we both know that change is good and it will be interesting to see how another person does missionary work. my new companion is SISTER MANDER!!!! she is, let's just say, amazing. she is from Australia and has the best accent ever and her mother likes to send her packages a lot. yes! this is going to be a good moves, i can tell....:)

something musical:

As President and Sister Van Dam are leaving this week, we held our "why i believe" fireside last sunday. The sisters i live with and my companion and i sang an a capella version of "Lean of Me" for them with beat boxing and everything. it was pretty sweet. we re-wrote the words to relate to christ:

christ, savior of men, came to the earth to save us from sorrow
he promised in love he'd lead us home if we would follow
lean on him, when you're not strong
he'll be your friend, he'll help you carry on
for, it won't be long, till we're gonna need our savior to lean on

just call on him brother, when you need a hand
we all need our savior to lean on
there's not one single problem he won't understand
we all need our savior to lean on

it brought me back to the good old days when i sang a capella in high school. so much fun! all 4 of us loved to sing and write new lyrics to songs that relate to the unique life of a missionary in hong kong. i will try to send a tape or something home with some of the songs we wrote....sorry, no digital files...:(

something lingual:

after 4 months in Honk Kong, i have officially become a "LANGUAGE GIANT." which doesn't really mean that much, but as missionaries, they give us goals and pass-offs to do for all 5 missionary lessons. i finally passed all mine off, which is a great relief, as they are somewhat stressful...at least for me. i can now teach all the lessons in cantonese...for the most part. i still have so much to learn, but the exciting thing is now that i am done with my lessons, i can start focusing more on characters and how to read!!! wahoo! this is what i've been waiting for. chinese characters are so amazing to me and pretty much an art all on their own, so i am excited to start understanding them more and learning how to write and read! the next level is a language master and then language legend. it's pretty hard for sisters to get the language legend as we are here for only 18 months, instead of 24 months like the elders, but i am determined to work as hard as i can toward it!

something food:

Yesterday sister vance and i decided to go all out and make some mexican food before she left. you have to understand that this is a very expensive thing to do here. first of all, just finding all the ingredients is difficult and requires a trip to the american grocery store, where everything costs twice as much! we made tortillas and a 7-layer bean dip with chips. the only problem was, we had a very hard time finding tortilla chips! they don't exist here. they had shrimp flavored chips, squid flavored chips, everything flavored chips, but no tortilla chips! ridiculous! you can't eat bean dip with shrimp flavored chips! luckily, the elders had more success that we did and came back with some ranch flavored chips that worked pretty well. it was so good and so worth it. man, i miss mexican food....mostly the cheese. so next time you stop into your local taco bell or cafe rio for some mexican food, think of me and be grateful! just kidding. enjoy it as much as you can for me!!!...:)
